SG Rev. Mother Eliswa

Mother Eliswa was born on Oct.15, 1831 in an ancient noble Christian family at Ochanthuruth in the Diocese of Verapoly in Kerala and was brought up by her pious strict parents who practised their religion zealously and were generous in their charity. At the age of sixteen she was married to Mr. Vareed Vakayil who belonged to an ancient rich Christian family at Koonammavu, in Verapoly. The happy couple was blessed with the birth of a girl child, Anna. But after a year and a half Mr. Vareed fell ill suddenly and succumbed to death.
Eliswa refused a second marriage and found consolation only in spending long hours in prayer, solitude and helping the poor around her home. heart in full sincerity to Rev. Fr. Leopold OCD. This young Italian priest discerned it as Teresian Charism that was working in her. He became the confessor and spiritual director of Eliswa.
The Congregation of Teresian Carmelites (CTC) was founded on 13th February, 1866. It is the first Carmelite indigenous Congregation for women in India. God marvelously chosen Rev. Mother Eliswa to be the foundress of the said Congregation.

Mother Eliswa Died on  1913.The declaration as Servant of God will take place during the Eucharistic celebration at St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, Ernakulam, on 30th May, 2008.
